Best Antivirus Rescue Disks

Many of the top antivirus providers provide a free bootable rescue disk that can be used to disinfect your system after an infection. These are Linux-based programs that can be used to cleanse any computer that is infected by malware when it isn’t able to start up or isn’t scanned by a standard antivirus program running on Windows. For convenience I recommend the Kaspersky disk (though it won’t work on some Dell systems).

You can also find similar features using the Avira or ESET rescue disks, which feature an interactive interface, but require an external USB or CD drive to start. Both options can scan and decipher any malware that is present on your computer. However their virus definitions may not be updated as frequently as the Rescue Disks that are Linux-based.

The Trend Micro rescue disk is a good alternative and is among the smallest of this list with a size of around 70MB. It does not come with a graphical interface, but it’s fast and has some customization options. This includes the ability to mount specific files, drive volumes, and even individual folders.

The Comodo Rescue Disk is a viable option to run a virus scanner, although it doesn’t offer the same flexibility as the Linux-based options. It’s a powerful tool for detecting and eliminating virus that may be hidden in Windows files, which prevents detection by standard antivirus software. It is possible to choose the text-only interface or a full-graphic interface. You can also conduct a smart scan or a custom scan.
